Facilities Coordinator

Job Summary
The Facility Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the Electronic Media Center and the Kala San Pablo facility, providing technical support to Kala's 70+ artists and instructors, house managing event rentals at the Kala Gallery, handling all organizational IT-related duties and responsibilities, and providing technical support at public programs. This is a hands-on position requiring excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and technical expertise in the areas of computer, photo, video, lighting, sound, and archival digital printing systems.

Works closely with all staff, especially with the Printmaking Studio Manager, Event Rental and Administrative Manager, Custom Print Manager, Director of Exhibitions & Public Programs, Program Coordinator: Artist Residency and Classes, Youth Program Manager and with Kala's 70+ resident artists and instructors.

Work hours are 32 hours per week, which will include some evenings and weekends, as required by the event rental and public programming needs. Position reports to the Executive Director. About Kala Art Institute: Kala Art Institute's mission is to help artists sustain their creative efforts over time through its Artist-in-Residence and Fellowship Programs, and to increase appreciation of this work through exhibitions, public programming, and educational efforts. Kala's high quality printmaking and digital media studios are located in Berkeley, CA.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
• Provide logistical and technical orientations of the EMC, digital equipment, and photo-shooting studio to Artists-in-Residence (AIRs), Fellowship Artists, and Instructors. Provides on-going support and technical expertise to Kala artists for their individual projects as needed.

• Responsible for IT support for Kala staff and organization's IT needs, including:

- Purchasing and installing computer equipment and software and backing up databases and financial files

- Develop and maintains network, servers, backup systems, and database systems for organization

• House manage and provide technical support for the Event Rentals program, as well as providing technical support for exhibitions, public programming, youth education, and other organizational events

• Responsible for maintaining Kala's Electronic Media Center and Kala San Pablo facilities, including overseeing any mechanical, electrical, construction, security, computer, printers, and other office equipment needs.

- Manage all facility keys, security systems, and implementation of effective security procedures

- Conduct planning, purchasing, and disposing of EMC and Kala San Pablo facility equipment, including printer inks, cartridges, and paper supply

- Oversee general cleaning and maintenance of Electronic Media Center and Kala San Pablo facilities

• Responsible for in-house printing and editing of promotional materials and videos for the organization

• Participate in organizational long-term planning and maintain departmental budget.

Essential Qualifications:
• Minimum 3 - 5 years experience in Facility maintenance with direct supervisory experience

• Minimum 2-3 years experience in superior customer service in special event or related industry

• Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills. Self-starter with strong organizational skills a must.

• Experienced with a wide range of media equipment, including but not limited to Mac and pc computers (mostly Macs), video, large-format Epson printers, sound, lighting, and digital projection equipment.

• Extensive knowledge and proficiency with lighting and sound systems and the production of public events.

• Demonstrated expertise of the following systems / programs and moving files and projects between them:

- Mac OSX 10.4 - 10.6
- Adobe Creative Suite including but not limited to (listed in order of importance):
Adobe Photoshop CS3-5.5
Adobe Indesign
Adobe Bridge
Adobe Premiere
Adobe Dreamweaver
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe After Effects 5.5

- Final Cut Studio including but not limited to (listed in order of importance):
Final Cut 7 (not X)
DVD Studio Pro
Compressor

- imovie
- Mpeg Streamclip or some other video file format and codec conversion experience
- Text Wrangler or other text/code editing program
- Filemaker Pro
- Some light Applescript experience
- Cyberduck or other type of ftp knowledge along with basic html and web knowledge
- Microsoft Excel and Word knowledge

Requirements:
• An outgoing, patient, and flexible "people person" able to work with a wide variety of artists within a multicultural environment

• Must be a team player able to multi-task, work independently, and with others. Participation in major fundraising events is an expectation.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good follow-up through telephone, e-mail and letters.

• Self-starter with great organizational skills.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds.

• Valid CA Driver's License and access to a vehicle required.

Hours: Must be able to work a flexible schedule - some evenings and weekends
32 hours per week
6+ hours per day, Mon -- Fri. preferred

Compensation: $17 - $18 per hour, D.O.E
