Kala Art Institute & Gallery announces Cashing Out, a call for entries exhibition open to all United States resident artists.
This juried group exhibition seeks work in all media that explores various aspects of commerce and alternative financial systems. Topical areas include but are not exclusively limited to:
bartering • trading • DIY projects • counterfeit goods • alternative communities • creative re-use • pop-up businesses • works that comment on the global financial crisis • works that explore alternative forms of commerce in the art world • artists re-envisioning art as a circulating commodity
Kala is proud to announce Julio Cesar Morales, artist, educator and curator, as juror/curator for Cashing
Out. Julio is an adjunct curator for Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for The Arts and the founder/co-curator
of Queens Nails Annex/Projects, an artist-run project space in San Francisco. He is also adjunct professor at The San Francisco Art Institute and associate professor in Curatorial Studies at The California College for the Arts. Recent curatorial projects include the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, The Nordic Watercolor Museum in Sweden, Pasadena Museum of California Art, The San Francisco Arts Commission, Southern Exposure and San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art, amongst others.

• Exhibition Dates: October 27 – December 3, 2011
• APPLICATION DEADLINE: August 26, 2011
• Cashing Out application is open to all current United States resident artists.
• Artists may submit up to five images of works created in any media within the past five years. Proposals
for new work to be created for Cashing Out are encouraged although Kala can not provide funding for the creation of new works. Only submit images of work that is available for the exhibition.
• Application fee is $25.
• Work previously presented at the Kala Gallery is not eligible.
• Artists are responsible for delivery and pick-up of selected artworks. Kala will accept artworks shipped via
Fed-Ex, UPS, etc, but cannot provide funds for the transportation of artworks.
• Artwork is insured while on site at Kala.
• Artist Statement (maximum 2000 characters- app. 400 words).
• Artist’s résumé (either .pdf or .doc file).
• Work Samples: Five JPEG images uploaded online or DVD. Please do not send both.
JPEG Images Upload 5 JPEG images including details. All images must be saved with dimensions of 1900
x 1900 pixels with a black matt at 72 dpi. Image uploading process requires information for each image.
Specific dimensions must be included.
• If submitting a proposal for a new work, give very detailed information and dimensions. Please keep in
mind that Kala can not provide funding for the creation of new work.
• DVD submissions – please mail or hand-deliver a DVD. Only for time-based artworks. 10 minutes
maximum. The online application form is still required.
• Application fee: $25 payable through Paypal.
