Bookmaking 101: Stabbindings and Paper Construction

This class is an introduction to making stab bound journals and paper construction. During this class we will explore classic bookbinding technique of Stab Binding, also known as Yotsume Toji. We will cover topics of paper types and paper selection, as well as basic stab binding variations and sewing techniques. We will also sew small journals with binders needles and wax thread, make a hard cover variation of Yotsume Toji bound book with integration of a flexible cloth hinge, and learn to construct a Paper Portfolio. A Paper Portfolio is a simple and elegant way to present, market, and protect your artist editions, photographs and one of a kind prints. Participants will walk away with beautiful handmade journals and a paper portfolio.
