Dig in and have fun exploring the concepts and techniques of sculptural practice with air dry clay! Practice clay modeling, experiment with shapes and textures, and sculpt from observation as well as imagination. You will learn coiling, pinching, rolling and various building techniques. Discover historical sculptural practices from Donatello’s Renaissance works, Louise Bourgeois’s modern metal and textile sculptures to contemporary artists Hew Locke and Nick Cave working in mixed media sculpture.

About the Instructor:

Chelsea Smith has a BA in Ceramics from the University of the Arts London. Currently she is the ceramics instructor at NIAD art center in Richmond CA. In the past she has taught visual art at Thousand Oaks elementary in Berkeley and El Dorado elementary in San Francisco. Prior to moving to the Bay Area, she was an English preschool and elementary school teacher in Seoul, South Korea. Chelsea is a practicing visual artist who has exhibited solo at EM Wolfman Gallery and Octopus Literary Salon. She has been a resident visual artist at Azule residency in North Carolina, Samoa Art center in Samoa and Old School Art House in Iceland.
