GRANT WRITING FOR ARTISTS

Lauren Davies and Celeste Smeland

Class #77: September 15, 17: Tuesday, Thursday 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Total Cost: $75

This two evening workshop will provide an overview of grant writing and professional proposal presentation for the individual artist. The workshop is team-taught by Celeste Smeland, Kala’s Development Director and Lauren Davies, Kala’s Program Manager. Lauren will focus on the various ways in which artists can create effective residency applications, commission proposals and gallery submissions. As a residency manager, curator and artist, Lauren will provide a dual-perspective on what jurors and curators are looking for in an artist’s application and as an artist, how to put your best foot forward with written materials and images.

Celeste will cover all elements of grant writing, including executive summary, statement of need, project description, budget and evaluation methodology. Additionally, issues such as artist and nonprofit organization collaboration, accessing funding resources, and current regional opportunities for artists will be discussed. Enrollment is limited to 15 students.

Lauren Davies is Kala's Program Manager and a San Francisco artist whose work focuses on our strained relationship to the natural world. Combining mixed-media sculpture and installations with drawing, Davies meshes dark humor with a “do-it-yourself” approach to materials and construction. Curiosity about slightly oddball hobbies and vocations such as correspondence course taxidermy and pedigreed dog breeding has been explored as subject matter. Scientific processes involving the counting of elements found in the natural world is also a preoccupation. Specific subject matter aside, each of these various projects combine labor-intensive studio processes with unusual materials.

Celeste Smeland is Development Director for Kala. She has more than 25 years of non-profit arts administration experience and has worked with many Bay Area organizations, including the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation, Bay Area Discovery Museum, SFSU School of the Arts, Institute of Noetic Sciences, and the San Francisco Women’s Building  Celeste holds B.A. degrees in Fine Arts and Women’s Studies from San Francisco State University, and a M.A. in Museum Studies from John F. Kennedy University.   She is a practicing artist, with an emphasis on drawing and printmaking.
