Modern Lithography: Mokulito and Polyester Plate Overlay

Wood Plate Mokulito is a modern lithography technique where hand-drawn images are inked up on a wood plate and run through an etching press with paper to create beautiful prints. Acrylic paint, lithographic crayons, ink washes, and Relief carving are used to create marks to produce unique and very personal imagery.

Come away from this class with the ability to create your own maple veneer wood plates, use a professional etching press, and 4+ of your own hand-made prints. Add an extra, more intricate dimension to your wood plate with a laser printed and inked polyester plate overlay on the existing wood plate. This class is great for both beginner or experienced artists or those who just want to try something new. All supplies are provided. Just bring your own drawings or creative ideas to the class.

About the Instructor:

Karen Olsen-Dunn incorporates image transfers in her large-scale paintings. Karen has a formal education in psychology, painting/drawing, and digital media with post graduate course work in printmaking. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2007 and BA in Psychology from San Francisco State 1988. She has shown her work in numerous exhibitions locally and nationally. Her professional career in the software industry developing instructional media for products has influenced her process and works to her advantage in developing her layered mixed-media works. She is able to refine her paintings by adding intricate patterns of organic and inorganic forms, building up layers of paint and acrylic transfers in the final image. Recently, five of her mixed-media works have been purchased by J.D. Thompson & Associates, San Diego, on behalf of the new Sutter Cathedral Hills Hospital campus in San Francisco. Karen has been an artist-in-residence at Kala since 2020 and completed a residency at In Cahoots with a 2-book edition of photopolymer prints. She has been teaching Image Transfer and Wood Plate Lithography in her studio at Pacific Felt Factory Arts Complex in San Francisco since 2017.
