Muralism: If These Walls Could Talk!

Have you ever looked at a mural and said “I wish I could do that!” You can! In this introduction to mural painting, students will learn how to design and collaboratively paint a large wall mural in Kala’s project space, as well as discuss the deep and rich history of murals rooted in the Bay Area community. Students will gain understanding and experience in planning out a large composition, drawing on the wall, varieties of painting materials, and application strategies. The class will culminate in an small public opening celebrating the completion of the mural.

About the Instructor:

Leslie Samson-Tabakin is an artist and educator based in San Francisco. She received her MFA in Printmaking and Installation from San Francisco State University in 2018, where she has taught several printmaking classes. In 2018 she completed a commission mural for Facebook Artist-in-Residence, and in 2016 she won the SFSU Fellowship Award for a Kala Artist-in-Residence.
