Oil Painting 101: Traditional Meets Modern

In this class, students will learn the basics of traditional oil-painting while honing their observational skills. There will be two main objectives throughout the 6-week course: The first three weeks will be a classical still-life approach where students will develop composition sketches and practice painting techniques. A more modern still-life approach will be covered in the latter three classes where students will create their own still life set ups and paint from observation while incorporating their own personal styles. Experimentation will be encouraged; for example, the forms can be abstract or distorted, and colors can be applied with palette knives instead of brushes. Students will aim to complete two medium-sized (16×20″ or smaller) canvas paintings throughout the course with an option for more depending on studio time.

About the Instructor:

Heather Yeo is a visual artist whose paintings are inspired by the ordinary events of her domestic life such as craft cocktails made by her husband, landscapes captured during family trips, and scenes from her routine meals. She develops unique 3D textures by using diverse painting materials and techniques; therefore, her paintings are often  more exciting when they are seen in person. She received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and her BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a recent fellow of Stove Works Residency in 2022 and currently represents a renowned gallery in South Korea. She has exhibited her work in Seoul, Singapore, Tel Aviv, Stockholm, and many major cities in the United States.
