Suminagashi: Japanese Paper Marbeling (ONLINE)

This 2 hr session is an introduction to the Japanese marbling technique of suminagashi or “floating ink”. Participants will learn paper and ink preparation, as well as brush application techniques used to create a series of uniquely marbled ink drawings on shiramine paper. Participants will want a flat working area with enough space to both work with wet materials, and to laying out prints to dry.

*Students will be a provided a list of materials that they will need to purchase prior to the class.*

Kala will be using Zoom, an online video conferencing service to bring participants our interactive creative lessons. Kala will follow recommended security measures, and set virtual classroom expectations so we can maintain a safe and fun learning experience for all participants online.

About the Instructor:

Solange Roberdeau is a visual artist whose own work explores perception and seeking out the creative potential in her immediate environments via abstract drawing. She works primarily on paper with sumi ink and uses metal leaf in her own studio practice. Solange received a BFA in Printmaking from RISD in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from MICA in 2012. She has taught and exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been the recipient of several artists grants incl. from the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation, CT and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, NM.
