Suminagashi: Japanese Paper Marbeling (In-Person)

This in-person course is an introduction to the Japanese marbling technique of suminagashi or “floating ink”. Participants will learn paper and ink preparation, as well as brush application techniques used to create a series of uniquely marbled ink drawings on shiramine paper. Participants will want a flat working area with enough space to both work with wet materials, and to laying out prints to dry.

About the Instructor:

Solange Roberdeau is a visual artist whose own work explores perception and seeking out the creative potential in her immediate environments via abstract drawing. She works primarily on paper with sumi ink and uses metal leaf in her own studio practice. Solange received a BFA in Printmaking from RISD in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from MICA in 2012. She has taught and exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been the recipient of several artists grants incl. from the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation, CT and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, NM.
