Zines for Teens Workshop

In this workshop, we will look through the gallery of queer expression that has come together in The Embodied Press: queer abstraction and the artists’ book. Participants will see the boundaries of what we call a book to be tested and then participate in creating zines and pushing those boundaries in new directions. Working with a variety of materials we will cover different formats, layouts, and subject matter students can use in their process as well as how zines are a vehicle for independent publishing. Participants are encouraged, as in the exhibition, to “revel in visual abstraction as an antidote to the daily pressure of navigating our identities.”

This workshop will be offered on the following dates. Join us for one or all three!

About the Instructor:

Elaine Ponce is an illustrator and makes artwork with honor and gratitude to our natural world centered around themes of ecology, folklore, and community. Their work aims to excite others about our outside world and all its wonder as well as how our mentality surrounding nature is affected by current colonial systems of power. Elaine is living and making art within the territory of xučyun, on the unceded land of Ohlone people past and present. (Oakland, California)  www.elaineponce.art
