Accessibility

The Kala Gallery & Community Classroom is wheelchair accessible. There are ramps at the San Pablo Avenue entrance and through the back parking lot that is shared with Orchard Supply Hardware. Enter the parking lot from Ashby Ave between San Pablo and 9th. Use the loading dock ramp on the far South side of the parking lot, closest to Outdoor Supply Hardware and Looking Glass Photo.

The Printmaking Studio is on the 3rd floor.  People with physical disabilities and / or access needs can access the studio via freight elevator, with staff assistance.

To enter via the Heinz Ave entrance: Go up the flight of outside stairs and use the buzzer entry system to call ‘Kala Institute’ to be let into the building. Climb to the top of three flights of stairs to the studio entrance.

For elevator access: The elevator is in the rear of the studio. From Heinz Ave heading west, turn left on 9th street (across from Berkeley Bowl West), then take another left into our parking lot. Our loading dock is on the north side of the lot (closest to where you entered). There are accessible parking spots in the parking lot, near the ramp up to the loading dock; staff will provide more specific directions to the elevator when you enroll in a class.

Service dogs and ESA (Emotional Support Animals) are welcome depending on the class. There may be certain classes that require materials or processes that are hazardous for animals, particularly in the Printmaking Studio.  Please email classes@kala.org prior to enrolling so we can assess and accomodate you and your service animal safely and efficiently.

For more information about accessibility or to request an accommodation, please contact Erina Davidson (Education Program Coordinator, Adult Classes) by email classes@kala.org or by calling (510) 841-7000, ext. 202.
