2008 APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Eight artists will each receive a Fellowship consisting of:
• a $3,000 cash award
• up to six consecutive months of studio residency at Kala Art Institute
• 24/7 access to Kala’s studio
• exhibition of artwork created during the residency in a group show at the Kala Gallery

Artists producing innovative work in book arts, electronic/digital media (video, sound, animation, etc.), installation art, photography and printmaking are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be judged on conceptual creativity, originality and artistic excellence as well as technical knowledge. The Fellowship Competition is juried by a panel including Kala’s Executive Director, Artistic Director, Program Manager and an outside Bay Area arts professional. The Fellowship does not include housing.

To be considered for the 2008 Kala Art Institute Fellowship Award, please submit all the materials listed below. Please follow the guidelines carefully to ensure that your work is properly reviewed by the panel of jurors. There is no application fee.

Submit the following materials:

  • Fellowship Application Form (PDF, Download)
  • Artist resume indicating technical skill level as it relates to Kala’s studio.
  • Recent work samples:
    -10 images on CD, or 10 minutes of time-based work on DVD.
    -Images on CD can be presented in JPEG or PDF format, or in PowerPoint.
    -CDs/DVDs will be viewed on Mac. Make sure your disk can be opened. If your disc cannot be opened your application will not be considered.
    -Do not send original artwork or catalogs or ask the jurors to review your website as an application.
    -If you choose to send more than 10 images, indicate the first 10. There is no guarantee that more than 10 works will be viewed.
  • Image list/narrative
  • Statement/project description discussing the work you intend to pursue at Kala. Please limit to one page.
  • Please complete and enclose the Alliance of Artists’ Communities one page survey. (Download)
