Welcome to the KALA Artist-In-Residence program.
Kala averages 50-80 Artists-In-Residence(A.I.R) per year. Approximately 50% of these artists come from outside the United States, creating an international forum for fertile exchange as art is created and discussed. Located in the heart of one of the major visual artist communities in the United States, Kala provides artists with ongoing 24 hour, 365 days a year access and technical assistance with advanced printmaking equipment. Utilizing over 8,500 square feet of space in the ketchup kitchen of the old Heinz factory, Kala strives to maintain a world class intaglio and lithography studio and a well equipped Media Center for digital arts including video and sound.
Artists-In-Residence are expected to have prior training in printmaking, computer operation and have a basic understanding of the workshop equipment. Kala's Workshop Managers offer technical suggestions and provide guidance for Artists-In Residence, but they are not expected to teach core techniques. If an Artist-In Residence needs introductory training in a particular area, a separate tutorial is arranged, or they are encouraged to enroll in a class.
Kala offers over seventy-five courses in advanced techniques on a yearly basis. These cover a broad range of media and general topics, from Fresco painting, bookarts, and photogravure to innovative digital printmaking. Artists-In-Residence receive a 20% discount on all workshop classes offered by Kala. Many artists find these workshops a valuable way to review and share techniques and to develop skills in new areas of interest.(Above photo is taken from the west side window of Kala workshop at 8:30 pm on June 25 in 2003)
