Artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo-processes, book arts and digital media including sound / video production can apply to become an Artist-in-Residence at Kala Art Institute. Residency applications are accepted throughout the year.
Resident artists receive access to the printmaking workshop and/or electronic media center; individual storage space; exhibition opportunities at the Kala gallery including the Artists' Annual show and possible exposure on Kala's website and other exhibition spaces; and participation in a vital, international artistic community.
Bay Area artists can make an appointment with Kala's Executive and Artistic Directors, Archana Horsting and Yuzo Nakano, for an in-person portfolio review and interview. To schedule a portfolio review, call the office at (510) 549-2977 and speak with Lisa Martin, Program Coordinator, Classes and Artist-in-Residence Programs.
Artists living elsewhere can submit the following by mail:
* Resume
* A portfolio of actual work, slides or photographs of the artwork
* Slide list
* A letter describing artistic goals
* Self-addressed envelope with correct return postage
Artists who apply for residency should be familiar with at least one of the media offered at Kala, and have a plan for the work they wish to accomplish during their residency. Kala encourages experimental uses of traditional technology. Considerations for acceptance are conceptual creativity, originality and artistic excellence.
