This intensive workshop introduces participants to the amazing array of possibilities provided by Adobe's image-editing program, Photoshop. Participants learn how to navigate Photoshop's interface and become familiar with various tools and techniques. Special attention is given to making skillful selections, adjusting contrast and color, retouching, masking, resolution issues, and the use of layers for collage and photo-composition. Suitable for both commercial and fine artists. Bring images up to 8x10" in size for scanning (photographs, drawings, 35mm slides, transparencies). Your "Photoshopped" image will be output as a high-resolution inkjet print. Bring a Mac-formatted Zip disk or CD-R to take your image home. Enrollment is limited to 7 students. Prior computer experience recommended.

David Harding is Art Director for Advertising at a San Francisco poster publishing company, using Photoshop exclusively for the past 5 years. He received a BFA in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, received a Jerome Foundation Fellowship at Kala in 1991 and has been a visiting artist in Dundee, Scotland. He has exhibited his work at the Triton Museum of Art, the Mendocino Art Center, and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.

Channels & Layers are two of the most powerful aspects of Photoshop. A knowledge of these gives an artist full control of his or her creativity. Making a careful selection is essential for the effective use of Photoshop, and Channels provide a way to facilitate and save selection-making. The use of layers allows you to edit and otherwise modify discreet picture elements. Enrollment is limited to 7 students. Prerequisite is Introduction to Photoshop.

Photoshop includes several powerful artistic painting tools that may initially seem obscure, but which are in fact readily understandable. Filters are one of the most misused and abused aspects of Photoshop; in spite of uses both obvious and cliched, they are an extremely effective tool and have many hidden attributes. One of the most common uses of Photoshop is compositing images. Learn how to prepare images for compositing, and the proper technique for isolating image elements and completing a seamless, believable image. Enrollment is limited to 7 students. Prerequisite is Introduction to Photoshop.
