      For artists in home studios without a press, this beautiful, low-tech process may be the perfect solution. This workshop introduces a traditional Japanese woodblock printing process, the key-block technique. You will learn to carve the woodblock, use Japanese carving tools, and print with water-based ink on Japanese paper. Participants will cut their own woodblocks and create a small edition of multicolor prints. All levels are welcome.
      Tomoko Murakami received an MFA in printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute. She was awarded a Kala Art Institute Fellowship in 1992. Her recent work embraces both traditional and contemporary approaches to the art of woodblock printing. Murakamišs work is exhibited internationally.

        Further exploration of the art of Japanese woodblock printmaking. While learning more about key-block technique, you'll be introduced to tool maintenance, the kento registration system, and a selection of Japanese paper. A valuable class for anyone interested in developing the ukiyo-e technique, one of the oldest and most expressive forms of printmaking. Previous enrollment in Introductory Mokuhanga is required.

          Participants will learn how to create multi-colored prints with the reduction printing method, which uses only one woodblock of the several blocks ordinarily used for color printing. You will produce prints in a spontaneous, intuitive way that is most suitable for the single-block method. Take advantage of accidental happenings during the preparation of the block.
