Monotype and Monoprint

These terms refer to a spontaneous printmaking process, where you work paint and draw directly on to the plate. Using either medium is an excellent way for painters or printmakers to explore imagery or a series of ideas.

Intaglio and Etching

In Italian, the word intaglio (pronounced in-tall-lee-o) literally means "in the cut." Intaglio includes all media that is printed with ink held below the surface of an etched, scratched or grooved plate. First developed in the 16th century, intaglio has a sophisticated visual vocabulary, a wide variety of techniques and many versatile applications. The resulting images can be mysterious and luminous, with rich tonalities.

Woodcut/Relief Processes

Relief printing is the reverse of intaglio - the ink is transferred from the surface of the plate rather than from the cracks and grooves. What is removed or cut away from the block or plate will not hold ink. Woodcut or block printing is oldest form of printing, with a rich history back ancient China and Egypt.

Lithography

Based on the principle that oil and water don't mix, lithographs are made by drawing an image with a greasy crayon directly onto a block of Bavarian limestone which is then chemically processed and sponged with water before the surface is inked up. The water covers everything except the greasy crayon marks, and only the image is charged with ink and printed when run through a special press.

Combined Techniques

If you enjoy collage or assemblage work, these mixed media classes may be ideal.

Photographic Processes

Photography and printmaking have had a long marriage, from the 19th century into the digital age. Listed below are several techniques, each with its own visual qualities. Some of these workshops focus on darkroom procedures, while others involve transferring a photographic image onto a plate for printing on a press.

Letterpress

Letterpress allows an artist to print elegant text, either by hand setting type or by creating photopolymer plates. In either case, artists at Kala can combine image and text to create broadsides, portfolios of prints or an artist books.

Painting, Fresco and Paper Techniques

Fresco is the art of Renaissance Italy in which paint is applied directly onto wet-lime plaster to create works of unrivaled luminosity and durability. Practiced now only by a handful of master craftsmen and artists, Kala offers this annual fresco workshop with Sandro Martini from Italy. He will demonstrate how this classical medium can be translated into a contemporary art form. You'll also learn the history of fresco and basic elements of fresco chemistry.

Electronic Media

Take advantage of Kala's state-of-the art Electonic Media Center by enrolling in one of these essential courses. This year, we offer new classes with teachers who have specific technical expertise, to provide you more options for combining traditional and new media.
