  • CONCEPT

Collaboratively, Kala Art Institute and Trillium Press offer one of the most comprehensive collections of printmaking equipment in the United States. Take advantage of our complementary resources in this two-week, jointly designed professional development seminar for experienced printmakers. Both artists and teachers will enjoy the array of tools and techniques available for combining digital media with time-honored techniques. An outstanding faculty is committed to creating bridges between these processes.

    Program
Participants are organized into two small groups alternating between Kala and Trillium in order to give each artist the greatest access to equipment and information. Throughout the two-week session, both Kala and Trillium staff work closely with students one-on-one, as well as giving group demonstrations. At Kala, students begin with an orientation to the range of equipment available, and an overview of work produced at our facility in a variety of media. With assistance from the faculty, students then devise plans for utilizing these options in the days to come. Various methods to merge the computer with printmaking are revealed, such as direct-to-plate digital lithography, dry film photo-etching on copper plates, and the use of our photo-polymer platemaker. Using Adobe Photoshop to scan, layer and composite output, students create transparencies from digital files ranging from high-resolution films to desktop quality images. Other highlights include learning progressive approaches to traditional intaglio techniques of hardground and aquatint with non-toxic grounds and safe studio practices. Orientation day at Trillium includes viewing work printed at the facility, and showing the distinctive proprietary methods they utilize. >From there, time is divided between input and output for digital file preparation. An entire day is devoted to working with Trillium's 4 x 5 digital camera, learning all the aspects of digital capture with this powerful and unique tool. Students can scan their own objects and collage material, either flat or 3-D, with a camera that is unrivaled in the digital-optics world. Students will also work with an Iris printer and digital assistant to color correct, enhance, and compose digital images. Ample time is given to delve into the world of high-end digital printing, working on your files/scans made with the digital camera. Participants are encouraged to experiment by combining processes and techniques from both facilities. We anticipate this cross-pollination of ideas will provide fertile ground for innovation.

    Resources
Kala Art Institute digital equipment available for this seminar includes a collection of networked Macintosh computers, high-resolution scanners, and two wide-format inkjet printers, one 24" and one 54". In the printmaking studio students will work with the Anderson-Vreeland Orbital A-2 polymer plate maker and non-toxic etching facilities to delve into modern alternatives to traditionally toxic printmaking processes. Several large American French Tool etching presses will be available for printing. Trillium equipment available for the workshop include an Iris digital printer and 4x5 digital camera, along with assistance in color correction and a staff with over 20 years of experience with fine art printing.
