Kala Fellowship Artists Talk

    Tuesday, March 30th 7:00 pm
Presents Paul Catanese and Cynthia Innis

On March 30 at 7:00 pm., we plan to roll out the red carpet and officially welcome two of our Fellowship Artists to the Kala community. Please join us at the Kala Gallery on Tuesday, March 30 at 7:00 pm. for a Fellowship Artists Talk with 2003 Fellows Paul Catanese and Cynthia Innis

Paul Catanese recently arrived at Kala from Chicago. He received his MFA in Art and Technology Studies from The Chicago Art Institute and has extensive teaching experience in digital media. Paul's work focuses on hybrid art forms, most recently utilizing and subverting Nintendo's Gameboy technology. Paul's Fellowship fortuitously coincided with his move to the Bay Area for a teaching position at San Francisco State University. For a preview of Paul's work, check out his website http://www.paulcatanese.com

Cynthia Innis was the only Bay Area artist awarded a Kala Fellowship in 2003. Cynthia received her MFA from the prestigious Center for Innovative Printmaking program at Rutgers University and was also a recipient of a Phelan Award in painting. Her work beautifully meshes painting and drawing with printmaking and elements of collaged fabric. She is represented by San Francisco's Braunstein/Quay Gallery where her work has been featured in several solo exhibitions. Cynthia has also been teaching at various universities and art schools in the Bay Area.

We encourage you to join us in welcoming our new Fellowship artists at this get-together. This event is free of charge and open to the public. Hope to see you there.

Kala Salon Series

Over the past year or so, I have heard a repeated request from a number of artists - let's have more opportunities to connect with each other for dialog, information sharing, critiques, theoretical discussions and the like. In response to your requests, we are initiating the new Kala Salon Series. The first in the series will take place next week in the Kala Gallery on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 pm.

Our first get-together will involve two things:

#1 A group discussion to determine what artists want from the Kala Salon Series. How should the meetings be structured, moderated, how often to meet, etc. Kala is essentially organizing the events and providing a meeting space - the structure is up to you.
#2 To kick off our new Salon Series, I have obtained a really great videotape to screen in the gallery. New York City¼s Art21 group has created a really terrific new documentary series on contemporary artists. Recently broadcast on PBS, these documentaries present a group of artists organized around a unifying theme. We will be screening Stories, a segment on artists working with satire and autobiography, fairytales and architecture, mythology and literature. Artists included are Trenton Doyle Hancock, Kiki Smith, Do-Ho Suh, and Kara Walker.

Please RSVP if you are inclined, contact me with questions and suggestions, or simply show up. I hope to see you here on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00 pm. Best,
    Lauren Davies
