JAN WILSON KAUFMAN
1935 – 2004

Our beloved friend and colleague passed away early in the morning on
Sunday, December 5th. Jan worked at Kala Art Institute for over 15 years
as both our bookkeeper and photographer. She was known as a person of
great warmth who possessed high spirits coupled with a devilish sense
of humor. Jan will be missed by all of us.
Kala will be hosting a memorial service for Jan this Sunday,
December 12th, from 6-9pm. The seated portion of the program
will start at 6:30pm in the Kala Gallery.
In addition to several speakers, you are invited to share any of your
personal memories of Jan with the assembly. A selection of photographs
by Jan will be on view in the gallery. Food, drink, and music will be
provided. We hope you will join us on Sunday night to celebrate the
life of Jan Kaufman – a truly unique individual.

her studio residency with a presentation of her work. Following Tatiana's
talk, Kala's Executive Director Archana Horsting will give a brief presentation
about her own visit to Minsk in 2002. As you may remember, Archana traveled
to Belarus for a very well received exhibition of work by Kala artists.

for exhibition in the Kala Gallery from February 10 - March 26, 2005.

"High Fiber" is proving to be one of the Kala Gallery's most popular and intriguing presentations. This group exhibition explores the intersection of digital technology and fiber-based artworks with a diverse selection of works that includes large scale, digitally generated tapestries, photo-based weavings, etched velvet portraits, viral doilies and sculptural installations. "High Fiber" will dispel any sense of nostalgia associated with weaving, fiber and crafts - it's not your grandma's sampler anymore!
Visitors to the exhibition have had numerous questions regarding materials and technical processes. To learn more about contemporary fiber-based works and digital media, please join us for our Gallery Conversation with the "High Fiber" artists and the directors of Magnolia Editions.

The next Kala Salon is scheduled for Thursday, June 24 at 7:30 pm.
Thursday, June 24 at 7:30 pm.
And now for something completely different - spend an evening with Nat & Justin.
This month's Salon should prove to be an especially exciting event with presentations by Nathaniel Russell and Justin Walsh. For those of you who aren't familiar with these two artists, the linking element is diversity of the super-cool variety with works in photography, drawing, silkscreen, book arts and music culture design.
Originally hailing from exotic Indiana, Nat Russell has been at Kala for several years as both a teacher and an A.I.R. His work was recently featured in "The Drawing Room" exhibition at the Kala Gallery. In addition to his eccentric plywood drawings, Nat works in letterpress, silkscreen and woodcut with numerous exhibitions to his credit. Also, you may have seen some of his quirky illustrations featured in magazines or his excellent limited hand made editions of record sleeves, posters, and books. Nat is also a founding member of both the Essen and Milvia art and design collectives.
Based out of Berkeley, CA and hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, Justin Walsh received his BFA from Carnegie Mellon and an MFA from the Art Institute of San Francisco. He is represented by the Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco and has work in the permanent collection at SFMOMA. Like Nat, multi-talented Justin also works in the parallel universe of letterpress and screen-printed posters for the music business. In 2001, he formed Resist Imposters. Check out his website www.resist-imposters.com for a selection of his show posters.
Please join Nat and Justin in the Kala Gallery on Thursday, June 24th at 7:30.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. Lite refreshments will be served.
For any questions, an RSVP, comments or suggestions, please get in touch
with Lauren Davies - Kala's Program Manager for Exhibitions and Public Events, either via e-mail at lauren@kala.org or at 510-549-2977.

The advent of digital media has enabled artists to address issues of scale in their work in ways previously unavailable. Our special guest Roland DGA Corporation local representative Alan Marshall will also be on hand to discuss the printer's technical capabilities, papers, inks, profiles and more.
