“Systems of Collecting” Artists’ Reception, May 26

Don’t miss our Artists’ Reception, Thurs. May 26, 6-8 PM, for “Systems of Collecting”–
a group exhibition at Kala Gallery.

“Systems of Collecting,” on view from May 19-July 2, visually explores organizational systems used in libraries, archives, private collections and natural history/anthropology museums.
Including internationally acclaimed photographer Binh Danh’s exploration of the Khmer Rouge’s Genocide Museum in Cambodia; Matthew Troy Mullins detailed paintings of libraries, greenhouse specimens and entomology collections; Ethan Turpin’s installation of a Victorian parlor with stereoscopic viewing devices featuring fabricated anthropological scenes; Jeanne O’Connor’s photographs of specimens from the British Empire’s Cathedral of Science at Oxford University Museum of Natural History: and Mari Andrews’ recreation of her studio featuring a life long collection of natural materials including rocks, pebbles, pods, twigs and seeds. The exhibition examines both the light and dark sides of collecting and the impulse to impose order on the chaos of life.
