BarristerÂ’s Gallery, Hot Iron Press, and the New Orleans Bookfair are pleased to announce the 7th annual exhibition of Babylon Lexicon, a showcase of artistsÂ’ books, opening October 28, 2006, and running through the month of November.

What it is:
Babylon Lexicon, a book arts exhibition assembled in conjunction with the New Orleans Bookfair, celebrates the work of artists who use the bound book or printed narrative as a medium of visual expression. Babylon Lexicon serves as a forum, a visual library, and a source of motivation for participating artists and visitors alike. The exhibition, the sister event to the New Orleans Bookfair, promotes the awareness of the visual arts within the literary community while displaying original modes of bookbinding.

Who Can Participate:
Babylon Lexicon gladly accepts works of art tightly or loosely associated with the form of the traditional book. Works in the exhibit may include, but are not limited to: hand-bound constructions or reconfigurations of existing books, book related works that are sculptural in nature, collections of sequential imagery, performances about or that somehow create bookworks, or any variation thereon. All works received will be exhibited.

How to participate:
Please complete and send the attached entry form, along with your handmade book art, and a $3 entry fee per book work (made out to Hot Iron Press) to:
Babylon Lexicon, c/o Hot Iron Press, 1422 Kentucky St., New Orleans, LA 70117.

If you are in the New Orleans area, you may drop off your artwork, along with an entry form, and a $3 entry fee per book work at BarristerÂ’s Gallery, 1724 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70113 from Tuesday through Saturday, between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm. Phone: (504) 525-2767 or 525-6246.

Works mailed or dropped off without an accompanying entry form will not be accepted. Entry forms may be copied for multiple entries – each entry must have its own entry form.

Mailed entries must be RECEIVED no later than October 25th, 2006. Entries which are dropped off may be received up until the day before the opening, October 27th, 2006. However, priority space and provision for works requiring special display considerations (which are to be provided by the book artist) will only be given to entries received before October 25th.

In addition to the $3 entry fee per book work, mailed submissions must include either a self addressed stamped envelope, well concealed cash, money order, or a check made out to Hot Iron Press for the full sum of return postage. Any entries received without return postage or with inadequate postage will be considered a donation to the Hot Iron Press ArtistsÂ’ Book Collection. Dropped-off works must be reclaimed from BarristerÂ’s Gallery no later than November 30th. Any works left beyond that time should also be considered a donation to the Hot Iron Press ArtistsÂ’ Book Collection.

If you are a performance artist who wishes to participate in Babylon Lexicon by performing a book related piece at the New Orleans Bookfair, please contact Kyle Bravo at

The Fine Print:
Visitors to Babylon Lexicon will be provided with cotton gloves, and every effort will be made to ensure the careful handling of your book works for the duration of the show. However, because of the special nature of artistsÂ’ books, and their necessity for handling by many viewers, no guarantee can be given that your work will not suffer wear or become damaged. Please keep this in mind when submitting a one of a kind bookwork. Neither BarristerÂ’s Gallery, the New Orleans Bookfair, Hot Iron Press, nor Babylon Lexicon will insure your work or be held accountable or liable in the event that damage occurs whether during the exhibition or in shipment to or from the exhibition. Artists may insure their packages with the mail carrier, and provide funds to cover insurance of return shipping at their option.
