Batik Dyeing: From Wax to Color (October)

This one-day, 5-hour introductory workshop will cover the A to Z of Batik – a method of hand painting fabric using wax as a resist – in just a few hours. Participants will be designing patterns, transferring the designs to fabric, applying wax, and hand painting the final piece to take home. This workshop is perfect for artists and enthusiasts who want to understand the nuances of an ancient craft and apply it to various cloth-based pieces of their choice. All levels welcome.

About the Instructor:

Vyjayanthi (YJ) Malladi is an artist and textile designer in San Ramon, California. Her tryst with creativity began with a passion for art during her teens, which led her to study fashion design at NIFT, one of India’s premier design institutes. For the past 20 years, she has been creating Batik and textile designs, pastels and watercolor paintings. She currently runs Art by YJ, a Bay Area-based design studio she founded. She specializes in hand-painted Batik, and her main source of inspiration is a combination of her Indian heritage, exposure to South East Asian Textile crafts, and a Western aesthetic. Her artwork combines Batik with illustration, resulting in unique pieces inspired by her daily life.
