Letterpress Pressure Prints

Join us for an immersive workshop delving into the captivating world of letterpress pressure printing! In this hands-on session, participants will explore the unique techniques and creative possibilities of pressure printing, a versatile method within the realm of traditional letterpress. Participants will discover the fundamentals of pressure printing, from understanding the principles of pressure to experimenting with various textures and substrates.

Through guided activities and individualized instruction, participants will have the opportunity to design and produce their own stunning prints, learning effective composition and layering techniques along the way. No experience necessary, all are welcome!

Accessibility – This class takes place in the Heinz Printmaking Studio (located on the third floor) and requires participants to climb two flights of stairs as there is no elevator access. Please email classes@kala.org regarding any  accessibility needs prior to enrolling so we can assess if we are able to accommodate you safely and efficiently.

About the Instructor:

Mary V. Marsh makes prints, artist’s books and installations exploring changing technologies of communication through a personal lens. Letterpress printed linoleum cuts, handset type and pressure printing combined with photopolymer intaglio were used in recent work. She has had solo shows at San Jose Museum of Art, Berkeley Art Center, SFPL Skylight Gallery, and Mercury 20. She makes artist’s books and prints as Quite Contrary Press, including collaborative works with Tony Bellaver, showing at galleries, CODEX, and in the collections of SFMOMA Library, The Bancroft Library, and many others. She received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1992, a 2018 Fellowship Award from Kala Art Institute, and a 2022 Small Plates award at San Francisco Center for the Book. She has taught extension classes at SFAI, printing workshops at Oakland Public Library, and Introduction to Letterpress at Kala Art Institute.
