Mokuhanga: Japanese Woodblock Printing (June)

This workshop introduces participants to the traditional Japanese woodblock printing process (mokuhanga) and the ukiyo-e printing technique. Participants will learn to carve the woodblock, use Japanese carving tools, and print with water-based ink on Japanese paper. Learn to carve your own woodblocks and create a small edition of multicolor prints! All levels welcome.

This class requires some hand dexterity to maneuver the carving tools. Participants should feel comfortable using tools with sharp blades and edges.

This class takes place in the Heinz Printmaking Studio which is located on the third floor and requires participants to climb two flights of stairs. About the Instructor:

Tomoko Murakami is a multi disciplinary artist who explores the medium of printmaking as a multi-dimensional art form, bringing attention to new possibilities in the mixed media art world. She received her MFA in printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute and MA in Transformative Arts from John F. Kennedy University. She is a recipient of the 1992 Kala Art Institute Fellowship and 2008 Susan Boulet Fellowship Award. Currently, she teaches at Santa Rosa Junior College and Kala Art Institute. Aside from her long career in teaching, Tomoko is skilled in restoring the beauty and integrity of Asian paintings.
