Broadsides ~ the original ‘posters’ ~ are the perfect excuse to explore the art of pairing relief imagery with hand-set type on a Vandercook cylinder press. This letterpress intensive will start with a history of broadsides, and discuss design approaches, linoleum carving techniques, and cutting images from sheet magnet for letterpress printing. On the second day, you’ll learn the history of type, related terminology, and how to hand-set type. We’ll cover paper and ink considerations, basic press set-up, operation and registration, as well as understanding general press mechanics to achieve even printing and clean impressions.
