Camp Kala 2024 Wk3 • Teen Studio: Drawing from Life • Ages 11-17 (WAITLIST ONLY)

Join us for a deep dive into drawing! Explore ways that drawing can reflect individual voices, through careful observation and exploration of mark-making. Learn about line quality, form, tone, negative space, and composition while using a variety of drawing media. Projects will include linear perspective study, still life, portraits, the figure (with a live model), landscapes, and personal narrative. We will look at local and contemporary artists and consider how representation can also be a means of expression. Throughout the week, we’ll practice different drawing techniques in a fun studio environment.

All levels welcome; Instruction provided to meet each student’s interests, needs, and strengths.

About the Instructor:

Yael Levy is a mixed media artist, storyteller, printmaker, and art teacher based in Berkeley, CA. Born and raised in Israel, Yael first moved to New York City in 2002 to attend the Art Students League of New York and earned a BFA in Illustration from Parsons The New School for Design (2011). She later earned an MFA in Comics at CCA (2017). Her work has been published in several magazines, and she self-publishes work as well, sometimes printing it and binding it by hand. She loves playing with forms and formats and mixing digital and tactile techniques. Most of Yael’s work is based on her own experience as a brown, bi-racial, bilingual, and bisexual woman. She also enjoys telling others’ stories, making up imaginary creatures, and painting images of nature. She believes the creative process to be its own reward and a tool for healing and growth. In recent years she’s been a Teaching Artist with Kala Art Institute, Richmond Art Center, and JCC of the East Bay and she has also taught workshops for various Zine Fests.
