At Thadeus Lake by Sherri Martin: 2006 Kala Board Prize Exhibition

Kala Art Institute is pleased to announce Sherri Martin as the recipient of the 2006 Kala Board Prize.  Ms. Martin’s exhibition proposal was selected from a highly competitive pool of California artists by juror, Yuzo Nakano, Kala’s co-founder and Artistic Director. The exhibition is accompanied by a cash honorarium donated through the generosity of the Kala Board of Directors.

Sherri Martin’s Kala Board Prize solo exhibition is titled At Thadeus Lake. Inspired by her experiences in the Canadian wilderness, Ms. Martin has created a large-scale sculpture and drawing installation that transforms the Kala Gallery into an expansive wilderness panorama. Working with exceedingly delicate materials, Ms. Martin’s forest is constructed from fragile, tissue-like layers of paper that have been colored with ink. Conjuring a genuine physical presence from simple materials, sinister owls watch over a landscape of delicate trees and boulders in this poetic work.

Sherri Martin recently received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Originally from Canada, she is now a resident of Reedley, CA.  Kala’s presentation of At Thadeus Lake is Sherri Martin’s first major solo exhibition.
