Visions from the New California


This two-venue exhibition series presented at Kala Gallery and 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, features eighteen Visions from the New California awardees from the past three years. The exhibitions feature Visions artists who developed new works at one of the California artist residency programs including Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Exploratorium, Headlands Center for the Arts, Montalvo Arts Center, 18th Street Arts Center and Kala. Kala will present works by Iris Charabi-Berggren, Asad Faulwell, Marnia Johnston, Justin Lowman, Rebecca Lowry, crystal am nelson, Anja Ulfeldt, Meeson Pae Yang, and Michiko Yao. Visions from the New California is a program designed to promote the work of outstanding California visual artists from diverse communities. This program is funded by the James Irvine Foundation with the exhibitions co-curated by Los Angeles-based independent curator Mark Greenfield and Lauren Davies from Kala.

Residency Projects

A group exhibition that features new work
created at Kala by our 2011-2012 Fellowship
award artists. The Fellowship residency award
program was juried in 2011 by Renny Pritikin,
writer, curator and Director of the Richard L.
Nelson Gallery at University of California-Davis.
The nine Fellows include: Michele Carlson,
Randy Colosky, Alison OK Frost, Seth Koen,
Vanessa Marsh, Sandra Ono, Francesca Pastine,
Lauren Rice and Gail Wight.

Keeping Time

The second thematic exhibition of Kala’s 2012
season is Keeping Time. This exhibition will be a
national call for entries opportunity for artists
exploring various modes of tracking time in a
wide array of media and processes. Please see
our website for information and guidelines on

Kala Artists’ Annual / Fresh Work

Kala’s annual presentation of fresh work features over one hundred members of Kala’s artists’ community including Fellows, Artists-in-Residence, workshop instructors and staff. Look for new works in an array of print media, photography, video, sculpture, drawing and painting.

Curated by Kala's staff members Mayumi Hamanaka and Yuzo Nakano, this continuous exhibition series features works on paper by artists affiliated with our studios. This group exhibition is presented throughout Kala's new gallery facility and changes every three-four months.
