Parent Artist Residency Program

Parent Artist Residency Program

Applications are now open via slideroom for 2023-24 parent artist residencies! See How to apply section for details.  We recognize that each artist-family has its own set of challenges when seeking a residency program. Families with multiple children of varying ages have different needs than families with older, more independent children. By offering a flexible residency experience in addition to our standard residency programs, we hope to create multiple entry points for artists to create artwork amidst the ever-evolving and diverse demands of family life. The Parent Artist Residency Program at Kala is generously supported by Sustainable Arts Foundation (SAF).

The Award

To date Kala has offered 10 rounds of Parent Artist Residency Awards. Each parent artist awardee creates an individual residency plan with up to $1000 worth of services that cover the residency, classes, Camp Kala or other youth art programs for their children, or consulting with Kala staff about professional development opportunities. Since 2021, one Fellowship award each year is designated for a parent artist.

How to Apply & Program Period
Artists interested in applying for the 2023/2024 Parent Artist Award can apply via the Fellowship Award and Special Program online application due March 15, 2023.  The current program period is June 1, 2022 through May 31, 2023 and the next cycle is June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2024.  We have one Fellowship award for a parent artist, one short-tem, 2-week parent artist residency with housing included, and two awards for local parent artists.
