Creating an Accordion Fold Artist Book

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make an artist book of your photos, drawings or writing? In this class, we will collaborate on a group accordion book of our images, text, collages and other work on paper. Each artist will learn to format, print, cut, fold and assemble an accordion fold book. Participants will finish the class with a finished collaborative artist book and a new set of basic bookbinding skills to take home. Come with an open mind and willingness to make mistakes; Photoshop experience is helpful but not necessary.

About the Instructor:

Tony Bellaver grew up in the  Bay Area where he was somewhat indifferent. He found riding his bike, taking photos, hiking and fishing with like-minded friends were more his norms. In 1985-86 he was a darkroom assistant at the Ansel Adams workshops in Yosemite for Charles Crammer who taught Cibachrome printing and Dye Transfer printing. After completing undergraduate studies at San Jose State University, he went to the San Francisco Art Institute for graduate school. While at SFAI, he expanded his vision of art, focusing on works that incorporated photographic elements using alternative photographic processes. Since graduating from SFAI his artwork has been exhibited at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the DeYoung Museum of San Francisco. Recent works have been shown at Chung24 Gallery in San Francisco, Seager/Gray Gallery and Steffany Martz Gallery in Chelsea NYC as well as Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, San Francisco Center for the Book, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. A recent acquisition of Resource Extraction and Whats Left Behind, featured at Codex 2024, was made by Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley . He lives and works with his partner Mary V. Marsh in Oakland, also collaboratively as Quite Contrary Press.
