Beginning Weaving on Tabletop Loom

This class will introduce you to weaving on a tabletop loom. We’ll devote the first half of the sessions to learning the basics, how to set up the loom, the difference between warp and weft, how different fibers interact with each other and weave a small sampler. During the second half of the sessions, students will focus on an individual project, either scarf or small hanging piece. No experience necessary, all are welcome!

About the Instructor:

Omayya Kanafani started weaving rugs for her dollhouse on a tabletop loom at the age of 6. She has been exploring textile arts ever since. She received a BArch in 2000 and a BFA in 2001, both from Rice University. She taught weaving, spinning, dyeing and knitting in NYC for four years before moving back to the Bay Area in 2005. Since then she has been weaving at the Richmond Art Center, and has continued her exploration of weaving and textile arts. When away from the studio, Omayya works as an interior architect and designer. She has a passion for working with her hands and connecting with materials. She is devoted to teaching those around her how to explore these same sensibilities.
