Camp Kala 2024 Wk6 • Teen Studio: The Comics Lab • Ages 11-17

Journey into comic illustration! Learn how to translate words into action and create vibrant comic panels in this one-week extravaganza! We will explore writing, storyboarding, illustrating, and laying out a visual narrative from start to finish, adopt techniques seen in animation and graphic novels, and develop and gain confidence in drawing the human anatomy and perspective. By the end of the week, participants will have a unique comic zine or hand-drawn storyboard highlighting their creativity and new storytelling abilities to share with families and friends!

All levels are welcome; Instruction is provided to meet each student’s interests, needs, and strengths.

About the Instructor:

 

Gideon Egbuchulam (He/Him), also known as Ivorycurlz, is a Nigerian visual artist based in California who practices sequential arts, character design, and animation. He studied at San Jose State University with a focus on illustration. He is part of several art collectives such as FAMEpresents and The BAYlies as an active creative in the Bay Area. Gideon is currently working on his first book, Quasar, which is a love letter to pulp sci-fi and the perils of growing up as a machine. Gideon enjoys sharing their love of comics, illustration, and drawing with young people and currently works as a teaching artist at Kala Art Institute and Youth Arts Exchange.
