Camp Kala 2026 Wk7 • Teen Studio: The Comics Lab • Ages 11-17

Learn how to translate words into action and create vibrant panels in this one-week comics extravaganza! We will explore writing, storyboarding, illustrating, and laying out a visual narrative from start to finish, adopt techniques seen in animation and graphic novels, and develop and gain confidence in drawing the human anatomy and perspective. By the end of the week, participants will have a unique comic zine or hand-drawn storyboard highlighting their creativity and new storytelling abilities to share with families and friends! All levels are welcome; Instruction is provided to meet each student’s interests, needs, and strengths.

About the Instructor:

Gideon Egbuchulam (he/him), also known as Ivorycurlz, is a Nigerian illustrator who works in animation and education. Unlike the Saturday morning cartoons of his childhood, Gideon explores the intersectionality of the black diaspora with his inspired deco approach and electric line work. That stands out in his debut comic series, Quasar Soldiers™ which led to his association with Nickelodeon as a story artist. Gideon enjoys sharing their love for illustration with young people and contributed with spaces such as the de Young/Legion of Honor, SFMOMA, Youth Arts Exchange, and Kala Art Institute.
