Ceramic Tile Workshop: Slab Building & Design

Expand your ceramic handbuilding skills and dive into the expansive world of design and function with tile making. This 2-day workshop will focus on slab-building and cutting the clay into tiles as well as design, patterning, and explore various decorative applications. Each student should anticipate creating 4-6 tiles by the end of the workshop. No ceramic experience necessary; all levels welcomed.

About the Instructor:

Andres “AJ” Serrano is a queer, Mexican American artist born and raised in the Bay Area. He received his MFA in Art (Ceramics) at SF State and his BA from UCLA, double majoring in Spanish and Chicana/o Studies. Andres’ work has been exhibited at the Berkeley Art Center, 500 Capp Street, Root Division, and the Richmond Art Center. Prior to his ceramic practice, Andres has a professional background in non-profits, with a focus on development, fundraising, and grant writing. When he’s not in the studio, Andres can be seen riding his bike through the East Bay, researching ceramic glaze recipes, exploring the bulk bins at Sprouts, and watching any Real Housewives franchise show.
