Intro to Copper Etching: Hardground

Beginning Etching Workshop: Hardground

Interested in the world of etching but brand new to the process? Join us for a one-day introductory hard ground copper etching workshop! You will learn a basic though vital technique within etching that lends itself to clean line drawing and cross hatching. While the focus is on guiding you through the entire process of hard ground etching within the 6 hour class, the goal is to have fun, gain comfortability with the materials and the studio, and to get all your questions answered. Participants should arrive with an original line drawing at 7X7” that they are ready to turn into a one-color copper etching.

This class takes place in the Heinz Printmaking Studio which is located on the third floor and requires participants to climb two flights of stairs. This class may require materials or processes that are hazardous for animals. About the Instructor:

Megan Broughton (b. 1990, California) is a multidisciplinary artist addressing the climate crisis, loss, transformation, and the sublime. She uses ice, fog, and air currents to underline our daily environments at risk. Her work stems from onsite study in the Arctic, whose materiality shapes and influences her practice. Exhibition highlights include shows at Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Richmond Art Center, and Crocker Kingsley Exhibitions. Residencies include MaréMotrice in Greenland, The Arctic Circle Residency in Svalbard, and In Cahoots in Petaluma, CA. Megan holds a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and worked in arts education for 13 years, most recently at The Oxbow School. Megan is a 2023/2024 California Arts Council Emerging Individual Artist Fellow and lives/works in San Francisco.
