Intro to Reductive Linocut

This class is an introduction to relief printing with linoleum. Students will also learn how to make reduction prints using a technique to make multicolor prints from one linoleum block. Students will learn the step-by-step process that will take their initial design ideas to a small final edition of prints. Topics we’ll cover include linocut supplies, carving techniques, print registration and printing with an etching press. No prior printmaking experience is necessary.

About the Instructor:

Rich Fowler is a printmaker based in El Cerrito, California. An avid linocut printmaker, he’s drawn to the tactile process of hand carving linoleum and continues to be thrilled by the anticipation of peeling the paper off the inked block to see the resulting print. Recently, he has participated in group exhibitions in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and Lincoln, NE. His work, often known by his studio name Boarding All Rows, can be found in private collections around the US and abroad. Rich teaches and writes about linocut online, does public print demonstrations from time to time, and is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.
