Artist Talk – Javier Enrique and Mahwish Chishty
Kala is honored to present a talk with 2024-2025 Fellows Javier Enrique and Mahwish Chishty!

Javier Enrique is a Boricua visual artist based in NYC and the archipelago. He focuses on photography and installation work relating to cultural amnesia and colonial trauma. He received an M.S. in public relations from NYU. In 2023, Javier participated in LMCC’s Arts Center Residency, Center Review Santa Fe, and held his exhibition at Puerto Rico’s National Archive, now part of Museo de las Américas’ permanent collection. In 2024, Javier was selected for the Bed Stuy Art Residency, the Woodward Residency, and NYLAAT. Javier is also a fellow at the Kala Art Institute. His work has been exhibited in Puerto Rico and the United States and featured in Contemporary And, Lenscratch, and Booooooom.
Mahwish Chishty combines new media and conceptual work with materials and techniques of South Asian art and craft traditions. Mahwish’s artistic research combines her interest in Pakistani traditional folk art/culture and contemporary politics as it relates to US/Pakistan relationship. Her work has been exhibited at the University of Technology Sydney Gallery in Australia; Boghossian Foundation–Villa Empain in Brussels; Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City; Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in New York City; Imperial War Museum in London; and Gandhara Art Gallery in Karachi. Chishty’s work is in public and private collections, including the Foreign Office in Islamabad; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka; and Imperial War Museum, London.
