Contract Rates

Kala welcomes 170+ artists-in-residence over the course of a year to work at Kala. We offer a variety of contract rates for different working needs and artist experiences! The contract is a binding agreement between Kala and the artist that they will stay for the amount of time that they have committed to and will abide by the terms of the residency. All residencies are highly subsidized and are made possible through generous grants and donations from foundations and individuals.

Kala offers two shared artist apartments a block from Kala. Each apartment is a 2-bedroom unit, meaning you will have your own bedroom and be living with 1 roommate and sharing a kitchen, living room, and bathroom. PLEASE NOTE: A small rate increase is effective October 1st, 2025.

3.5-Week Residency with Kala Housing: $1,700 total per person (rate effective Oct 1st). Full-time residency and Kala’s shared artist apartment are available to artists who reside outside the Bay Area.

2-Week Residency with Kala Housing: $1,100 total per person /*$1400 total (rate effective Oct 1st). Full-time residency with Kala’s artist apartment is available to artists who reside outside the Bay Area.

1, 2, or 3-Month Part-Time Residency: $315 per month / *$340 per month effective Oct 1st
3 days per week access; no housing is included in this option.

1, 2, or 3-Month Full-Time Residency: $470 per month / *$490 per month effective Oct 1st
4 to 7 days per week access; no housing is included in this option.

6-Month Part-Time Residency: $240 per month /*$260 per month effective Oct 1st
3 days per week access is available to artists-in-residence who have completed 3 months of residency; no housing is included in this option.

6-Month Contract – Full Time Residency: $400 per month / *$420 per month effective Oct 1st
4 to 7 days per week access is available to artists-in-residence who have completed 3 months of residency; no housing is included in this option.

12-Month Part-Time Residency: $2,580 per year ($215 per month) / *$2,760 per year effective Oct 1st. Up to 3 days per week of access is available to artists-in-residence who have completed the initial residency contract. This is a one-time annual payment (can be split into two installments); no housing is included in this option.

Collaborative Residencies: For artists working collaboratively, we have created a 1+ residency rate, which is 1.5x the 1-person rate:

1, 2, or 3-Month Collaborative: $510 per month for 3 days per week; $705 per month for up to 7 days per week *effective Oct 1st; no housing is included in this option.

6-Month Collaborative: $390 per month up to 3 days per week; $630 per month for up to 7 days per week *effective Oct 1st; no housing is included in this option.

Emerging Artists-in-Residence: For artists who have graduated from a BA, BFA, or MFA program in the last 24 months, Kala offers a discounted residency rate to artists for one year after graduation. Emerging artists receive a 10% discount on 3.5-week and 2-week contracts with Kala Housing.

1, 2, or 3-month emerging artist rates are $220 per month for a part-time residency, and $420 per month for a full-time residency; no housing is included in this option.

Senior Artists-in-Residence
Artists (65+ years of age) will receive a 10% discount per month on all residency rates.

Single Day-Use
Available to former artists-in-residence only
$100 per day (12-hour use; no storage space)
