Influenced by the work of NuYorican poet Miguel Piñero Bodega Sold Dreams is a series of screen prints investigating the urban landmark of the bodega. The series started in 2007 and completed in 2010. I employ commercial styles of communication to portray announcements of varying distinctions– titles of songs and poems, collective struggle slogans, popular sayings– paired with objects that are common to the environment of that vernacular. Constantly being sold something and debating the effects of materiality, these works are concerned with the discourse of collective culture.

Siembro Una Rosa Blanca Pa’Ti is a tribute to the famous words of Cuban poet Jose Marti and a musical duet by Cecilia Cruz and Tito Puente. Indicative of the bodega’s cross-cultural display of consumables, this print portrays a historical lineage of poetry and music from artists on the margins.
